The Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) officially began in Avaza, Turkmenistan, with leaders from across the globe gathering to address the unique challenges faced by these nations. The opening ceremony, held at the Avaza Sports Complex, featured remarks from Turkmenistan’s leadership and the UN Secretary-General, who emphasized the urgent need to strengthen access for LLDCs to global markets through enhanced cooperation and international support.
The event’s inaugural session underscored key themes such as South-South collaboration, the role of youth and civil society, and the development of inclusive parliamentary platforms to address economic and social barriers. High-level representatives from the United Nations, including the President of the 79th UN General Assembly, also participated in the discussions. The plenary session is underway at the Avaza tourism complex, where Nepal is being represented by its Prime Minister, who is also expected to speak on behalf of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) group.
In addition to delivering a national and group statement, Nepal’s delegation will engage in several bilateral meetings with other participating nations and UN officials. The conference holds particular significance for LLDCs, which face structural obstacles in international trade and development due to their geographic limitations, making connectivity and cooperation vital to their sustainable progress.
