In response to rising public dissatisfaction over unannounced power outages, the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has intensified efforts to expand the national transmission infrastructure. The state-owned utility has attributed recent electricity interruptions in several areas to system tripping caused by weak and outdated infrastructure. To address this, NEA has issued a public notice inviting expressions of interest from contractors for the installation of high-capacity transmission lines at multiple locations.

The ongoing projects include the construction of an 80 km 400 kV transmission line along the New Khimti–Dhalkebar corridor, a 118 km line connecting Tingla, Dudhkoshi, and Dhalkebar, and a 94 km stretch in the Arun (Hub)–Inaruwa segment. Additionally, a 30 km 220 kV transmission line is being installed in the Lapsifedi–Teenpiple corridor. These upgrades aim to strengthen the national grid and ensure reliable electricity supply across the country.

The total estimated cost for the development of these transmission lines is around USD 320 million. NEA’s focus on large-capacity infrastructure marks a critical step toward improving system resilience and addressing growing demand, while also preparing the grid to accommodate increased power generation from upcoming hydropower projects.
