Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel officially assumed his role as the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) today, pledging to strengthen the security of public deposits in banks and financial institutions and improve the nation's loan policies.

Taking charge at the NRB Central Office in Baluwatar, Governor Poudel emphasized the central bank’s commitment to supporting the government's fiscal policy while maintaining the autonomy of the monetary authority.

"Monetary policy plays a key role in ensuring the success of fiscal policy. Regulation and supervision are equally important, but we must focus on enhancing supervisory capacity rather than tightening rules excessively," said Governor Poudel during his inaugural address.

He stressed that policymaking would be driven by consultation and coordination. "Policy decisions should emerge from dialogue. I don't believe in pushing forward decisions unilaterally. We will move ahead only after holding discussions with all relevant stakeholders," he added.

Addressing the recent resignation of NRB Executive Director Dr. Gunakar Bhatt, Governor Poudel commented briefly, stating that it was an internal matter of the central bank.

In his first decision upon taking office, the newly appointed Governor approved the printing of new banknotes in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations.

Dr. Poudel's appointment comes at a critical time when the central bank faces the dual challenge of ensuring financial sector stability and supporting economic growth through prudent monetary measures. His commitment to transparency, collaboration, and institutional strengthening signals a proactive approach to central banking in Nepal.
