Switzerland Reaffirms Support for Nepal’s Democracy and Development

The Ambassador of Switzerland to Nepal, Dr Danielle Meuwly, paid a courtesy call on Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, discussing a range of issues including bilateral relations, parliamentary cooperation, Nepal’s peace process, and development support.

According to the Speaker’s Secretariat, the meeting highlighted the longstanding and cordial ties between the two countries, which were formally established in 1956. Welcoming the Ambassador, Speaker Aryal noted that Nepal places high importance on its relationship with Switzerland, describing it as one built on mutual respect and cooperation.

During the meeting, Speaker Aryal praised Switzerland as a global example of successful participatory democracy and shared that Nepal is continuously working to strengthen its democratic institutions down to the local level. He also appreciated Switzerland’s contributions to Nepal’s socio-economic development through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Expressing optimism about the future, Aryal said development cooperation between the two nations is expected to expand further. He also emphasized the importance of high-level exchanges in strengthening parliamentary ties and invited the President of Switzerland’s National Council to visit Nepal. The Speaker reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to continuing the Nepal-Switzerland Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Federal Parliament.

Ambassador Meuwly, on her part, reiterated Switzerland’s commitment to supporting Nepal in addressing shared challenges such as climate change and socio-economic development. She also assured continued assistance in strengthening Nepal’s democratic institutions and completing the remaining aspects of the peace process.
