The government has removed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki from his position and appointed Additional Inspector General (AIG) Manoj KC as the new chief of Nepal Police.

A Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday decided to appoint KC as the new IGP. KC currently heads the Crime Investigation Department of Nepal Police.

According to Cabinet sources, Karki has been relieved of his responsibilities as IGP and placed under the Office of the Prime Minister as a special security adviser.

The government’s decision comes amid growing questions over Karki’s role in several recent controversial incidents, including police operations involving journalists and media organizations. He had also faced criticism over alleged irregularities in the procurement of police uniforms for election security and concerns over command and control within the police organization.

Karki was appointed IGP on November 10, 2025, by the government led by then-Prime Minister Sushila Karki and assumed office two days later. His tenure, however, was marked by several controversies.

The latest Cabinet decision effectively transfers Karki from the police command to an advisory role under the Prime Minister, while KC takes charge as the new head of Nepal Police.
