Oppn parties anti-govt mass rally today

KATHMANDU, FEB 08 -

Nine agitating opposition parties , including the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, are all set to organise a mass meeting in Kathmandu on Friday. They will demand replacement of the incumbent government with a national unity one.

A joint meeting of the parties on Thursday called on their cadres, well wishers and the general public to lend their support in their bid to topple the government.

“The first phase of the programme that started from Dalilekh on January 19 ended with significant support from the people.

We want to urge all Nepalis committed to democracy to express solidarity with our protest programme tomorrow,”

NC Spokesperson Dilendra Prasad Badu said in a joint press statement issued after the meeting.

The parties claimed that over 100,000 supporters will show up in the Capital on Friday.

On Thursday afternoon, the opposition parties organised a motorcycle rally as part of their publicity campaign. According to leaders involved in mobilising their cadres, door to door campaigns and pamphlet distribution has ended in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

Badu said parties will come up with a second phase of the agitation on Monday.
