Nepse falls by 14.75 points

KATHMANDU, April 24:
The secondary market has resumed its slide in the first week (April 17 to 22) of the new Nepali year as the market index fell by 14.75 points during the week’s trading.

The market that was going through a sluggish run since last some months had witnesses ed a rise last week. However, the surge could not be continued this week. This week closed at 358.45 points nearing the fifty-seven months low at 358.04 points on March 29.

On Sunday morning, the secondary market opened at 373.20 points after a single day of gain. However, by the closing time the market reached 367.54 points. On Monday, the index went down to 365.50 points. For the next two days, the index continued its slide. On the last trading day of the week, the index went further down so that the market closed at 358.45 points after the week’s trading.

This week, Nepse’s trading floor observed 511,541-unit shares of 114 companies worth Rs 99.3 million being traded through 8,101 transactions in the five trading days. This is 82.77 per cent increase in the transaction volume in comparison with that of last week.

The sensitive index measuring the performance of Class-A companies declined by 3.56 points reaching 88.68 points by the end of the week. Among the total transactions, the trading of blue chip stocks of Class-A companies consisted of 64.51 per cent amounting to Rs 64 million.

The float index that indicates the performance of the actual shares traded throughout the week also went down by 1.23 points to 29.81 points.

This week, all of the subgroups except for manufacturing ended up in the red zone. Manufacturing subgroup gained 4.55 points in the week’s trading as Unilever gained Rs 60 and Bottlers Nepal (Balaju) stocks also went up by Rs 13 per unit over the week.

The commercial banks headed the losers’ pack this week by losing 20.24 points. Nepal Telecom’s loss of Rs 2 also brought the others subgroup down by 16.45 points. Bishal Bazaar Company’s loss of Rs 117 per unit share brought the trading subgroup down by 10.02 points. Hydropower, insurance, development bank subgroups also went down by 4.56 points, 6.16 points and 5.18 points, respectively. Likewise, hotels and finance companies also lost 1.13 points and 0.74 points, respectively.

This week saw Capital Merchant Banking and Finance topped the charts in terms of transaction amount and number of shares traded with the transaction of 204,900-unit shares worth Rs 30.79 million and in terms of number of transactions, Gaurishankar Development Bank Ltd topped with 1,046 transactions.

The top five performers in the secondary market this week in terms of transaction volume are Capital Merchant Banking and Finance (Rs 30.79 million), Chilime Hydropower Company (Rs 6.8.9 million), Standard Chartered Bank (Rs 5.91 million), Nabil Bank (Rs 2.88 million) and Bank of Kathmandu (Rs 4.34 million).
