Nepal's Electricity Regulatory Commission Introduces 2080 Electricity Grid Code

The Electricity Regulatory Commission has officially released the 'Nepal Electricity Grid Code, 2080'. Following extensive discussions, stakeholder consultations, and feedback, the Commission has meticulously developed and implemented this crucial grid code.
Section 2.3 2.1 of the Electrical Grid Code 2080 outlines the establishment of the Grid Code Management Committee (GCMC) to oversee the grid and grid code's international distribution system. The committee, chaired by Commission member Gautam Dangol, is responsible for appointing the chairman, member secretary, and other committee members, with specific tasks to fulfill.
The Commission emphasizes the pivotal role of the grid code in electricity transmission and distribution. A nation typically operates with a single national grid, making the development of this grid code a meticulous and critical endeavor for the Electricity Regulatory Commission.
In crafting the grid code, the Commission engaged in direct consultations with diverse stakeholders, subject matter experts, and service provider organizations. Additionally, a workshop was conducted to finalize the grid code and solicit valuable feedback from stakeholders.
Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Wasnet, inaugurated the workshop, stressing the importance of creating codes and standards to effectively manage electricity demand and supply, potentially enabling electricity export.
Effective management of the electric grid code is essential for the secure and reliable delivery of electricity to consumers and can help prevent incidents such as accidents resulting from electrical power fluctuations.
The recently implemented electric grid code establishes guidelines for meeting minimum electric current standards, maintaining grid balance, and managing electric current within and beyond Nepal's borders. It plays a crucial role in planning, operating, and managing the power transmission system efficiently and fairly. Moreover, it regulates the entry and operations of national and regional grid users, facilitating international electricity trade and regional interconnection. This comprehensive document outlines guidelines, procedures, responsibilities, standards, and obligations for Nepal's grid system's connection, operation, maintenance, and development.
The grid code's development serves to define boundaries between grid owners, system operators, and grid users while establishing procedures for operating facilities that rely on the transmission system. Furthermore, it sets fundamental rules and standards for grid system development and security, contributing to public and environmental protection.
