Landslide Disrupts Transportation on Beni–Jomsom–Korala Road in Myagdi

A landslide in Siruwari, Ward No. 2 of Raghuganga Rural Municipality in Myagdi has severely disrupted transportation services along the Beni–Jomsom–Korala road within the Kaligandaki Corridor. This key route, which passes through the northern regions of Myagdi, Raghuganga, and Annapurna Rural Municipalities, serves as an essential link between the tourist district of Mustang and the national highway, further extending connections to China and India.

According to local reports, the landslide occurred following the cracking and sliding of land from the Kaligandaki River side to Majhakhark of Bhagwati, leading to a complete obstruction of vehicular movement along the road. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of road infrastructure in hilly and mountainous regions during periods of unstable weather and rainfall.

Transport entrepreneur Bhoj Bahadur Thapa stated that the landslides at Siruwari and Khambhitta have created serious challenges for transportation along the Beni–Jomsom road. He explained that even minor rainfall often triggers landslides in the area, repeatedly blocking the road and forcing vehicles to take dangerous and narrow alternative routes through muddy terrain. “Whenever there is normal rainfall, landslides occur, obstructing the road, and vehicles must take risks to navigate the narrow and slippery paths,” he said.

Frequent landslides along the Beni–Jomsom–Korala road have long been a matter of concern for locals, travelers, and transport operators. The route is not only a major supply line for the northern villages of Myagdi and Mustang but also a vital corridor for tourism and trade activities. The recurring blockages have caused delays in the transportation of essential goods and have posed risks to drivers and passengers alike.

Authorities have been urged to prioritize road maintenance and implement preventive measures, such as slope stabilization and drainage management, to reduce the risk of landslides. However, the difficult geography and limited technical resources have made long-term solutions challenging.

With monsoon-related hazards persisting in the region, locals fear that the disruption could continue, affecting both daily travel and the movement of tourists heading toward Mustang. Until the road is cleared and stabilized, transportation services along this vital corridor remain uncertain.
