The government has granted a public holiday on the occasion of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha) on Thursday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs today issued a press release stating that in accordance with the information published in the Nepal gazette on 2079/12/02, on Thursday (i.e., Ashad 14, 2080) to celebrate the occasion of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha) observed by the muslim community, a public holiday has been granted.

On the occasion all public offices including the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) will remain dormant.

Eid ul-Adha, also known as Baqra Eid or Namkeen Eid, is characterized by the consumption of savory dishes made from the meat of the sacrificial animal. Public prayers play a significant role in both Eid festivals.

During Eid-ul-Adha, Muslims reflect on the spirit of Prophet Abraham and his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son in obedience to Allah's command.

This festival marks the conclusion of the Hajj Pilgrimage, which is the fifth pillar of Islam, following the Declaration of Faith, Offering Prayers, Fasting, and Alms Giving. Each year, approximately 3 million people gather in Mecca to perform the pilgrimage together.

Eid ul-Adha falls on the tenth day of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijja, determined by the visibility of the moon each year. It is a day of thanksgiving when Muslims come together in a spirit of brotherhood and joy to express gratitude to Allah for guiding them on the righteous path.

On this occasion, Muslims offer prayers in a unique manner and commemorate Hazrat Ibrahim's remarkable act of sacrifice by slaughtering an animal themselves. People visit each other's homes, share festive meals consisting of special dishes, beverages, and desserts. Children receive gifts and sweets, adding to the joy of the celebration. Muslims take the opportunity to visit their loved ones, relishing delicious Muslim delicacies and drinks, creating lasting memories of the festive season.
