Governor Paudel Attends BIS Annual Meeting in Switzerland, Engages in High-Level Bilateral Discussions
Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Dr. Bishwanath Paudel participated in the 95th Annual Meeting of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), held in Basel, Switzerland from June 27 to 29, 2025. The BIS, established in 1930, serves as a forum for central banks and currently comprises 63 member central banks. The meeting brought together governors and senior officials from member nations, aiming to foster international monetary and financial stability through cooperation and innovation in central banking.
During the event, Governor Paudel took part in various interactive sessions, including discussions on cross-border payment systems and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in central banking. These sessions focused on the challenges and opportunities posed by AI, and the policy frameworks central banks need to adopt to ensure a secure and efficient banking system. He also attended a session on financial stability in the context of evolving global economic dynamics and the role of central banks in addressing systemic risks.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Dr. Paudel held bilateral discussions with BIS General Manager Agustín Carstens and other senior officials. The talks centered around potential collaboration on foreign exchange reserve management, including gold purchase and diversified investments in global instruments. He also met with Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, discussing enhanced bilateral cooperation in payment systems, banking transactions, and human resource capacity development. He was accompanied by NRB officials Govinda Prasad Nagila and Sharan Kumar Adhikari.
