KATHMANDU, JAN 13 -

The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) on Monday urged the opposition parties which have been holding bandas to give up such actions as it would push the country further back.

The federation said in a press release that the organisers of bandas should turn to other creative pressure tactics instead.

“At a time when the political parties should be concentrating on partnership and consensus with the deadline for the promulgation of the constitution close at hand, a few political parties have resorted to organising shutdowns and strikes against the wishes of the business community and general public.”

The private sector body said that the number of bandas and strikes had come down drastically in recent days resulting in an improved investment climate in the country. In the last few years, various parts of the country had been crippled by bandas called by political parites and different groups.

The FNCCI said that bandas had not benefited anybody in the past and that none of them had been successful either. “It is clear that factories, vehicles and educational institutues have been closed down due to fear as a result of the government’s failure to ensure security,” it added.
