Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has been included in the prestigious TIME Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2026” list, marking a significant moment for Nepal on the global stage.
The list also features global leaders such as Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, placing Shah among the world’s most powerful and impactful figures.
Shah, 35, rose to power following his victory in the national elections held in March 2026. His political success is widely attributed to strong support from young voters and the broader wave of public demand for change that emerged after recent mass protests in Nepal.
According to TIME’s analysis, Shah represents a new generation of leadership driven by youth energy and dissatisfaction with traditional, establishment politics. His rise has been described as part of a wider political transformation led by younger citizens seeking transparency, accountability, and reform.
Before entering national politics, Shah was widely known as a hip-hop artist and later gained national recognition as the Mayor of Kathmandu. During his tenure, he initiated reforms in areas such as waste management, education, and public health, which significantly boosted his popularity.
He is also known for his outspoken stance against corruption and his direct communication style, which has resonated strongly with the youth. His background in music has further helped him connect with younger generations, strengthening his public appeal.
Despite his rapid rise and growing international recognition, challenges remain. Questions persist over whether Shah can replicate his local-level success at the national level, especially while addressing issues such as economic inequality, poverty, and institutional corruption.
