Bangladesh to Purchase Additional 20 MW Electricity from Nepal
Nepal and Bangladesh have agreed to move forward with the export of an additional 20 MW of electricity, increasing the existing supply from 40 MW to 60 MW. The decision was made during the seventh meeting of the Energy Secretary Level Nepal–Bangladesh Joint Steering Committee on Energy, held on Thursday in Dhaka.
According to Sandeep Kumar Dev, spokesperson for Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, both countries reached a consensus to begin the necessary technical preparations to facilitate the additional power export.
The meeting saw participation from Energy Secretary Chiranjibi Chataut, representing Nepal, and Farzana Mamtaz, Secretary at the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, representing Bangladesh. The committee reviewed recommendations from the joint action committee meeting held on November 26.
Spokesperson Dev informed that six key agendas were discussed, including advancing cooperation in renewable energy and energy efficiency. Both sides agreed to complete internal processes soon and sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in the energy sector.
Under the proposed cooperation, Bangladesh will provide technical assistance to Nepal in areas such as energy testing, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and rooftop solar systems. The two countries also plan to enhance capacity-building programmes to support energy sector development.
The secretary-level steering committee has been actively working to expand power trade, strengthen the energy sector, and exchange development experiences between the two nations.
