Test finds poison in Gudpak

KATHMANDU:
Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) has found toxic elements in Gudpak sold in New Road-based Corner Taja and Sri Krishna Gudpak shops. The Gudpak has toxic elements which are harmful to health, said Jeevan Prabha Lama, director general at the department.
“Gudpak has high level of bacteria and acidic elements that can cause food poisoning,” she said. According to her, 9,000 bacteria counted in one gram Gudpak and presence of fungus also noticed in remarkable level.
“People must stop eating Gudpak from today,” she said explaining consequences, “Bacteria and fungus together can cause instant vomiting and diarrhea.” The department report shows, 9.8 acid level and chloroforms found in dirty water harmful level.
Likewise, no sign of animal ghee found in Gudpak. “Reichert Missel (RM) value was 1.16 in the ghee,” she said. According to Food Act , RM value should be at least 28 in animal ghee.
The department submitted the report to Kathmandu District Administration Office to support investigation on adulteration in Gudpak. Chief District Officer Lakshmi Prasad Dhakal handed over the report to Metropolitan Police Range, Hanuman Dhoka to file case against Gudpak shops owners today.
Owners of New Road-based Corner Taja Gudpak Bhandar Narendra Maskey and Madan Baba Maskey and owner of Sri Krishna already in police custody since last week. Police is planning to file black marketing case against Gudpak owner.
“We are planning to file case demanding at least two years imprisonment and Rs 200,000 fine,” said Dhiraj Pratap Singh, deputy superintendent of police at Metropolitan Police Range, Hanuman Dhoka. According to him, police has been investigating three cases– Anomal Sweets, Kanhaiya brand ghee and Gudpak– at the same time. Laboratory test of Kanhaiya brand ghee had found substandard last week and Anomal Sweets had found using the ghee in making sweets.
Meanwhile, the department shut down Puspa dairy firm in the charge of producing low quality packaged milk. According to spokesperson of the department Pramod Koirala, the dairy factory has not maintained batch number and date of manufacturing in packets.
He said, “We disposed 1,000 liters of milk in packets and sealed eight sacks of powder milk weighing 25 kg each because they did not have labeling and lacked other necessary information.”
He stated that they had called Puspa Bahadur Basnet to be present in the office of DFTQC for further clarification.“Until the quality of milk is maintained, Basnet cannot open his daily,” he said adding, “When we are assured of its quality, then only we would permit him to open his firm and sell it to consumers.” They had brought some samples of milk, water for lab test.
Authorities are currently active in market to control adultration food items.
