KATHMANDU:

Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Yubaraj Khatiwada, today, said that the country needs to generate jobs for at least 700,000 people per year for the next 10 years to stop exodus of labourers. “To generate such a large number of jobs, our economy needs to expand by at least 10 per cent for the next couple of years,” Khatiwada told a parliamentary committee meeting on economics and labour affairs today. He further said that one area which has the potential to create a large number of jobs and give impetus to economic growth was agriculture. “To ensure growth of agricultural sector, we have already instructed banks and financial institutions to extend at least 12 per cent of total loans to agri and hydro sectors,” the governor said. “At the same time the government should expedite the process of framing a bill on contract farming so that we can promote commercial farming.”
