Byas Municipality has generated an income of approximately Rs 1.45 million from the sale of recycled waste products during the first seven months of the current fiscal year, demonstrating how systematic waste management can also become a source of revenue.

From mid-July 2025 to mid-February 2026, the municipality earned Rs 1,450,611 by selling recyclable materials such as paper, glass, and plastic collected from households and office premises, according to Chief Administrative Officer Sukadev Lamsal.

Facing growing waste management challenges, the municipality introduced a system to collect segregated waste directly from households. Biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste are gathered separately using different vehicles to ensure easier processing and reduce environmental impact.

Lamsal explained that mixing all waste in one place had created operational difficulties in the past. The new system allows biodegradable waste to be managed separately, while recyclable non-biodegradable materials are sorted and sold, generating internal income for the municipality.

Mayor Baikuntha Neupane said the municipality has prioritized segregation from the very beginning of waste collection. Even within non-biodegradable waste, items such as glass, plastic, and paper are further separated and compressed using machines before being sold to recyclers.

The municipality has also conducted awareness programs targeting households, ward offices, and schools to educate residents on proper waste segregation practices. This community-level participation has played a key role in improving waste handling and increasing recyclable output.

Located in Tanahun, Byas Municipality now views waste not just as a management challenge but as a sustainable resource, combining environmental responsibility with local revenue generation.
