KATHMANDU, April 10:
Telecommunications sector is booming in the recent days, according to the regulator Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).

“Around Rs 12 billion was invested in the telecommunication sector by different investors during last fiscal year,” said Bhesh Raj Kanel, chairman, NTA.

The amount covers the investment in the mobile services, limited mobility technology, Internet and broadband services, he said.

The authority is collecting detailed figures of the investments of the past years as well so that a comparative study of investments in the sector can be made, Kanel said, adding that the annual revenue of telecom sector is almost Rs 35 billion and its contribution to the government coffer works out to about Rs 20 billion.

The investment in the telecom sector has also been increasing due to increasing user-base, Kanel said, adding that the telecom service users have reached around 10.15 million. The data shows that 40 per cent of Nepalis are using telecom services.

Currently, six telecom service providers — Nepal Telecom, Ncell, UTL, STM Telecom Sanchar, Nepal Satellite Telecom and Smart Telecom — are offering telecom services in the country.

All the telecom service providers are investing in infrastructure and technology to expand their services and reach new consumers.

Nepali consumers have started to use mobile service from 1999 after Nepal Telecom (NT) started to provide GSM Cellular Mobile services for the first time in Nepal.

NTA was established 11 years ago on March 4, 1998, as the regulator of telecom sector with the aim of making the telecommunications service reliable and easily available to the public, protecting the rights and interests of consumers by ensuring quality service, among others.
