Samsung Electronics and its workers’ union resumed negotiations on Wednesday, with South Korea’s labour ministry mediating efforts to prevent a large-scale strike that could disrupt semiconductor operations.
The union at the global memory chip leader had planned to begin a strike after talks over bonuses collapsed, with tens of thousands of workers reportedly prepared to walk out over disputes related to profit-sharing and bonus caps. The union is demanding changes to compensation policies, including higher profit-linked bonuses, amid strong earnings from the company’s AI-driven chip business.
Management and union discussions continue amid rising tensions, as the company has reported record profits and crossed a $1 trillion market value. While concerns remain over potential disruptions, analysts suggest the impact on highly automated chip production may be limited. Authorities and the presidential office have urged both sides to continue dialogue to avoid broader economic consequences.
