Province No. 2 named as ‘Madhes’ with ‘Janakpurdham’ as its capital

Province No. 2 has finally got its name and permanent capital, almost four years after the formation of the Provincial Assembly. The provincial assembly has decided the name and permanent capital of the province through voting.

A two-thirds majority of the members of the Provincial Assembly voted in favor of naming the province as Madhes and Janakpurdham as the permanent capital.

A joint proposal of the ruling Janata Samajwadi Party, the CPN (Maoist Center), and the main opposition Laktantrik Samajwadi Party for the Madhes province received 80 votes.

Speaker Saroj Kumar Yadav announced that the proposal of Madhes province was passed with more than two-thirds of the votes. At present, there are 104 MPs in the Provincial Assembly of Province No. 2, and two-thirds or 70 votes were required to pass the resolution. Janaki Pradesh, Mithila Bhojpura, and Madhya Madhes Pradesh were registered along with Madhes Pradesh for the name of Province No.2.

Similarly, the proposal to retain Janakpurdham as the provincial capital was passed by a two-thirds majority. The joint resolution of all the parties to make Janakpurdham the capital was passed by a two-thirds majority in the provincial assembly. Out of the current 104 members of the provincial assembly, 99 votes were cast. In which 78 votes fell in favor of the proposal to make Janakpurdham the capital.

This was the second attempt to the name province and determine its capital. Prior to this, the name and the capital could not be decided even when voting was held on March 15, 2008. Both proposals failed to garner the required two-thirds majority.
