NRB governor hospitalised after heart problem

KATHMANDU, SEP 30 -

The Nepal Rastra Bank ( NRB ) Governor Yubaraj Khatiwada has been admitted to the Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre, Maharajgunj, after he suffered a “heart blockage” on Saturday at a function in Kathmandu.

Dr Yadav Bhatta, who is heading the team of doctors for the treatment of Khatiwada, told the Post that the governor has a “slow heart beat” and he needs a pacemaker implanted to rectify the problem. “We will keep him under observation until Tuesday to implant the pacemaker,” he said.

Currently, the hospital has implanted a temporary pacemaker and family members said the doctors have suggested implanting a permanent device to prevent an emergency situation.

“We are positive about doctor’s advice on needing to implant a pacemaker and we will make a decision after holding talks with our father,” said Dipendra Khatiwada, the son of governor Khatiwada.

The governor has been recovering in the hospital’s coronary care unit (CCU), according to family members, and he has been talking normally with them. When Khatiwada, who exhibits high blood pressure and sugar, was attending a function of Khatiwada Samaj at New Baneshwor, he suddenly fainted and vomited, according to his son.

He said the governor was first admitted to the Bharosa hospital at New Baneshwor, and he was taken to Gangalal hospital on the advice of doctors shortly after an ECG test.

After further ECG tests at Gangalal, he has been put in the CCU ward of the hospital. His son said that it was the first time his father had suffered such a heart problem.
