The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has requested the public not to stockpile cooking gas, assuring that there is no shortage in the country.  NOC clarified that gas imports from India are regular and sufficient. The recent long queues at some depots are being called an "artificial shortage" caused by panic buying and unnecessary storage by households and businesses.

In its recent notice, the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has introduced several measures to stabilize the market and ensure fair distribution of cooking gas. To prevent an artificial shortage, the corporation is urging consumers to stop refilling spare cylinders and to purchase only what they need for immediate use. Alongside this, the government is making a strong push for energy independence by encouraging households to switch to electric or induction stoves, which helps reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imported fuel. To protect domestic users, gas bottling plants have been strictly ordered to prioritize deliveries to regular homes before supplying commercial clients like hotels or large industries. Finally, the government has intensified market monitoring, warning that any dealer found hiding stock or overcharging customers will face immediate and strict legal action.

Why is there a scare?

While the supply in Nepal is stable, the NOC noted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has made global fuel markets unpredictable. This international news has led many local consumers to fear a future price hike or supply cut, resulting in a sudden rush to buy extra gas. Currently, about 100 gas bullets are entering Nepal daily. To ensure every family gets the gas, the NOC has also introduced a new rule requiring gas dealers to keep a record of every customer’s name and phone number.

Current Prices

Despite rising international costs, the price of a cooking gas cylinder remains unchanged at Rs 1,910 in Kathmandu. The corporation stated it is using its stabilization fund to keep prices steady for the general public following the recent elections. The NOC has asked consumers to remain calm and report any shop that refuses to provide gas despite having stock.
