NFTA seeks waiver in demurrage and detention charges

KATHMANDU, Sep 10:

Nepal Foreign Trade Association (NFTA) has urged the government to initiate the process of providing waiver in demurrage and detention charges borne by traders during the bandha periods.

Meeting Revenue Secretary Rajan Khanal at his office on Wednesday, a NFTA delegation led by its president Ramesh Gupta requested the secretary to waive such charges which the traders are required to pay due to the holding of their consignment in India's Kolkata port.

"The delegation has requested the Revenue Secretary to initiate a dialogue with the concerned agencies to provide waiver in demurrage and detention charges extracted at the Kolkata port for consignments stalled there because of the reluctance of trucks and containers to transport such consignments to their destinations," NFTA said in a statement.

According to the statement, Khanal told the delegation that the ministry was looking for solutions to problems created by the bandhas going on in the Terai region.
