New Academic Session Begins from Baisakh 15 Following Government Directive

The new academic session across Nepal has officially commenced today, Baisakh 15, in line with a revised school calendar introduced by the government.

The adjustment was made to address longstanding concerns over the rushed start of the academic year, which traditionally began in the first week of Baisakh. In previous years, schools often initiated enrollment immediately after the New Year without allowing sufficient time to publish annual examination results or distribute certificates.

The government had earlier directed schools to delay the start of the new session to ensure a proper gap between the conclusion of the previous academic year and the beginning of the next. The decision also considered practical challenges such as disruptions caused by fuel shortages.

Despite the directive, reports indicate that some local levels had already begun student enrollment processes ahead of the official start date.

In addition, authorities have reiterated instructions to private schools to comply with existing fee regulations. Schools have been warned to refund any fees collected in violation of the Fee Determination Directive, 2072, ensuring that guardians are not subjected to undue financial burden.

The move aligns with a prior order issued by the Supreme Court of Nepal, which prohibited schools from launching new enrollment campaigns before publishing results and distributing original certificates from the previous academic session. The order was issued by a single bench of Justice Balkrishna Dhakal.

The court had emphasized the need for a well-structured academic schedule, directing schools to maintain proper timing for result publication, certificate distribution, and the start of new sessions.

The revised timeline is expected to bring more order and transparency to Nepal’s school system, benefiting both students and parents.
