Nepal's Public Debt Soars to Rs 2.388 Trillion, Marked by Surge of Rs 218.86 Billion in Additional Loan

According to data released by the Public Debt Management Office, Nepal's public debt has escalated to Rs 2.388 trillion as of Falgun (mid-March) of the current fiscal year 2023/24. Over the last eight months of the fiscal year, Nepal has acquired an additional loan amounting to Rs 218.86 billion.

During this period, the government has repaid Rs 146.64 billion of internal debt and Rs 28.86 billion of external debt. However, it has also incurred an increase of Rs 163.31 billion in internal debt and Rs 55.55 billion in external debt.

The data further delineates that the government's current internal debt liability stands at Rs 1.185 trillion, while its external debt liability amounts to Rs 1.202 trillion.

Additionally, the government has disbursed only Rs 126.3 billion for acquiring these loans, with interest payments totaling Rs 49.47 billion.

This surge in public debt underscores the fiscal challenges faced by Nepal amid its ongoing economic endeavors.
