Nepal’s Development Banks’ Net Profit Surges 56.98% to NPR 9.42 Arba in Q4 2082/83; Garima Bikas Bank Leads Earnings

Out of 16 development banks, categorized into National and Regional levels. Overall, the industry performed strongly, with total net profit growing by 56.98% from 600.14 Crores (Q4 81-82) to 942.09 Crores (Q4 82-83), raising the industry average net profit from 40.01 Crores to 58.88 Crores.

National level banks dominate total earnings, led by Garima Bikas Bank (GBBL) with the highest Q4 82-83 net profit of 168 Crores (+28.21% growth) and Muktinath Bikas Bank (MNBBL) at 151 Crores (-1.78% growth). Jyoti Bikas Bank (JBBL) recorded the most dramatic surge, jumping from 1.24 Crores to 100 Crores. Conversely, regional-level banks generate significantly lower profits, led by Excel Development Bank (EDBL) at 30.94 Crores (+656.48%), while Sindhu Bikas Bank (SINDU) suffered the sharpest drop, falling by 99.15% down to just 0.1 Crores.

 Distributable Profit and Distributable Profit Per Share:

An analysis of Q4 2082/83 performance across 16 development banks highlights a stark divergence between top profit generators and struggling institutions. Total earnings volume is led by Jyoti Bikas Bank (JBBL) with 1.44 Arba in distributable profit and Garima Bikas Bank (GBBL) at 1.21 Arba. However, Garima Bikas Bank (GBBL) leads overall profitability on a per-share basis, delivering Rs 20.23 per share compared to JBBL’s Rs 3.28. Lumbini Bikas Bank (LBBL) and Shine Resunga Development Bank (SHINE) also demonstrated strong shareholder returns, posting Rs 16.99 and Rs 16.86 per share, respectively.

Conversely, five financial institutions operated in negative territory during this period. Saptakoshi Development Bank (SAPDBL) registered the largest deficit, posting a distributable profit loss of -0.55 Arba and a severe per-share drag of -Rs 66.98. Sindhu Bikas Bank (SINDU) similarly experienced heavy pressure, recording -0.23 Arba in distributable profit and Rs -42.46 per share, reflecting a sharp operational divide across the development banking sector.
