Nepalgunj Customs Office has managed to collect only around 52 percent of its revenue target in the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2082/83, raising concerns over meeting the annual goal.

According to Chief Janardan Poudel, the office has collected Rs 12.75 billion out of the annual target of Rs 24.54 billion by mid-Falgun, achieving just 51.97 percent of the target. With only four months remaining, the office now faces the significant challenge of collecting the remaining 48 percent within a short period.

The customs office has consistently fallen short of its monthly targets throughout the fiscal year. Revenue collection stood at 74 percent in Shrawan, 69 percent in Bhadra, 87 percent in Asoj, 72 percent in Kartik, 83 percent in Mangsir, 83 percent in Poush, and 88 percent in Magh.

A comparison with previous years shows mixed performance. In fiscal year 2081/82, the office achieved 74.64 percent of its annual target, while in 2080/81, it managed only 63.35 percent.

Despite expectations that revenue would improve following the operation of the integrated check post at Jamunahana along the Nepal-India border, the anticipated growth in import and export activities has not translated into higher customs revenue.

Officials now face mounting pressure to accelerate collections in the remaining months to narrow the gap and meet the annual target.
