The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is set to invest Rs 3 billion in a joint venture aimed at developing two new cross-border transmission lines between Nepal and India.

According to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, the JV will be formed in partnership with India’s Power Grid Corporation. The investment structure includes Rs 1 billion from Nepal for the JV, while Rs 2 billion will be invested in the JV from India. The NEA will finance its share from internal resources.

Officials from both countries have agreed that the JV will oversee the development of the Inaruwa–Purniya and Dodhara–Bareli cross-border transmission lines key infrastructure projects expected to significantly enhance electricity exchange capacity between Nepal and India.

The Ministry stated that these critically important transmission lines are targeted for completion by 2030, enabling smoother, high-capacity energy trade. As per the agreement, the JV based in Nepal will hold 51 percent ownership from the NEA and 49 percent from India’s Power Grid Corporation.
