PM Balen Shah Chairs 27th MEC Meeting; NPR 6.55 Billion Budget Approved

The Medical Education Commission (MEC) has approved a budget and program worth NPR 6.55 billion (NPR 6,55,25,98,000) for the current fiscal year 2026/27.

The decision was made during the commission’s 27th meeting held on Wednesday at the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers' Office, chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah 'Balen'.

Out of the total approved budget, NPR 5.99 billion is funded directly by the Government of Nepal, while the remaining NPR 560.4 million will be covered through the commission's internal revenues.

According to officials, the commission had an internal reserve balance of NPR 998.5 million at the end of the previous fiscal year (mid-July 2026). Additionally, it projects to collect NPR 350 million from internal sources during the current fiscal year, bringing total internal funds to NPR 1.34 billion. From this reserve pool, the meeting agreed to allocate NPR 560.4 million for this year's operations, NPR 474.2 million for regular running expenses and NPR 86.2 million for capital expenditure and long-term development.

Key leaders present at the meeting included Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel, Health and Food Safety Minister Nisha Mehta, MEC Vice-Chairperson Prof. Dr. Devendra Bahadur Khatri, and Member Secretary and Joint Secretary Basanta Prasad Koirala.
