NCC Urges Government to Rethink MRP Enforcement and Prioritize Awareness Over Penalties

The Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) has urged the government to reconsider its sudden enforcement of Maximum Retail Price (MRP) and labeling regulations. During a meeting with Minister Damodar Bhandari, NCC Vice President Deepak Shrestha emphasized the need for public awareness and education before strict enforcement.
The Chamber criticized the Department of Commerce for skipping essential preparatory steps, instead opting for abrupt monitoring and penalization, which has caused concern among compliant businesses.
NCC warned that rushed implementation could harm Nepal’s fragile business environment, disrupt trust, and contradict earlier agreements between business associations and the government. While supporting consumer rights and fair regulations, the Chamber stressed that enforcement must be balanced and transparent.
The NCC called for dialogue-driven solutions, inclusive awareness campaigns, and cooperative action to ensure clarity, compliance, and a lawful business environment, urging the government to treat businesses as development partners rather than adversaries.
