IMF Assures Support for Nepal’s Economic Reform Agenda

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reaffirmed its commitment to support Nepal in advancing economic reform initiatives under the new government. During a virtual meeting with Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal, IMF Mission Chief Sarwat Jahan conveyed the organization’s readiness to collaborate on reform programs while also reviewing the implications of Nepal’s recent political changes on the economy.

Minister Khanal noted that the immediate priority of the government, formed in the wake of nationwide protests, is to conduct timely elections to the House of Representatives. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to strengthening governance and creating employment opportunities in line with the aspirations expressed by the Gen Z movement. He further assured that Nepal remains dedicated to pursuing ongoing reform measures in consultation with the IMF.

According to the Finance Minister’s Secretariat, the meeting also covered the status of the Extended Credit Facility currently being implemented with IMF support. Minister Khanal said Nepal will soon assess its impact and submit the sixth review report to the IMF Board. He added that the government intends to accelerate reforms based on the Fund’s recommendations to restore stability and bolster growth.
