Government recommends tax waiver for second international airport

Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has recommended the government to waive tax and custom charges to minimise the project cost of second international airport planned at Nijgadh of Bara district.
Land Mark Worldwide Company has submitted its final report regarding the project study of the second international airport, which has been estimated at $ 600 million.
“Construction of second international airport will bring huge economical changes in the country,” joint secretary at the ministry Ranjan Krishna Aryal said, adding that the government has to act wise and take positive decision. “Everyone wants safe investment.”
If the government waives tax and custom charges, it will help reduce the project cost,” he said, adding that the government should show its seriousness and should make good negotiation with the company. “It is a huge project and only good negotiation can bring radical changes in the economy of the country,” Aryal said, “But if government fails, it will miss another huge investment project in Nepal.
The South Korean company in its final report of the second International Airport at Nijgarh, Bara has also added some of its conditions. According to Aryal, the company has asked the government to make the Tribhuwan International Airport a domestic airport.
“But we are not able to agree as it is the only established commercial international airport,” he added.
The final report will now be forwarded to the Built Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) committee to go through before final approval for the negotiation.
The company in its feasibility study presented ideas for the runway, terminal and services at the international airport. It also stated that the proposed airport could handle five to 15 million passengers annually and even accommodate the super-jumbo Airbus 380 after the first phase of construction. “It will also generate employment for around one lakh people, once it comes to full operations,” Aryal said.
Tribhuvan International Airport is the only international airport in the country.
