In an effort to protect the nation's foreign exchange reserves from further decreasing, the government had formally banned the import of at least 10 items that it deems luxury or non-essential on Baishakh.

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supply has continued the prohibition on the 10 prohibited commodities with greater rigor as of the start of the new fiscal year – 2079/80.

Earlier the government had the imported diamond, excluding those used as industrial raw materials. The government has also banned the import of mobile sets that are worth more than $600 and color televisions over 32 inches. Additionally, the Import of jeeps, cars, and vans [except ambulances and hearses, vehicles that carry dead bodies] has also been banned. Likewise, the import of motorcycles above 250 ccs, all kinds of toys, and playing cards have also been banned.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supply published a notice in the gazette and continued the ban imposed on Baisakh until Bhadra 14.

According to the new notice of gazette, the import ban on motorcycles has been added above 150 cc and mobiles priced above $300 have been added to the restriction list.
