Government Decides to Ban Unregistered Social Media Starting Today
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has announced that all social media platforms operating in Nepal without official registration, including Facebook, will be banned starting today.
The decision was taken during a meeting held at the Ministry led by Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung. This move follows a Cabinet meeting issued on Bhadra 9, 2082 (August 25, 2025), which had given social media platforms a one-week deadline to complete their registration in Nepal.
As the platforms failed to comply within the given timeframe, the ministry has decided to implement the ban immediately, aiming to bring digital platforms under regulatory oversight.
