Government Abolishes Civil Service Trade Union Provisions
The government has officially removed provisions related to trade unions within the civil service, citing long-standing administrative disruptions caused by politically affiliated union activities.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, Section Officer Bibek Bidari from the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration confirmed that Section 53 of the Civil Service Act, 2049, has been repealed by Ordinance 2083, which was introduced to amend several Nepal Acts. With this amendment, trade unions in the civil service cease to exist.
Following the enforcement of the new legal provision, the Ministry has directed all ministries, departments, commissions, secretariats, and government bodies to shut down trade union offices. These entities have also been instructed to return all government assets, including buildings, office spaces, vehicles, and other facilities, previously used by such unions. Additionally, civil servants previously affiliated with these unions have been asked to resume their designated duties, with respective offices responsible for ensuring proper work allocation and management.
