KATHMANDU, April 20:
The government plans to upgrade four highway corridors to six-lane roads within current fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works (MoPPW).

According to the Department of Roads, the proposed six-lane roads are Rani-Biratnagar-Itahari-Dharan (49 km), Birgunj-Pathlaiya (28 km), Butwal-Bhairahawa (24 km) and Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel (15.4 km).

Four consultants have presented the draft of the roads at the DoR on Friday. “After it is finalised, tenders will be called,” said DoR officials. “The report will be forwarded to the MoPPW before inviting bids.”

Tulasi Prasad Sitaula, joint-secretary at the MoPPW, said the government has allocated Rs 700 million for four roads in the current fiscal year. “The National Planning Commission has directed the ministry to allocate at least Rs 900 million for the four roads in the next fiscal too,” he said.

The six-lane roads comprise central four-lane tracks and two service tracks. “The life of the road will be 10 years and a vehicle can run at a speed of 80 km per hour on central four lanes and 40 km per hour on service lanes,” they said. “Street lights will be installed in the city areas and junctions.”

The DoR informed that four billion rupees has been estimated for Rani-Biratnagar-Ithari (30.5 km), five billion for Birgunj-Pathlaiya, 2.6 billion for Butwal-Bhairahawa and three billion for Suryabinayak-Dhukhil sections.

“These roads will be completed within five years,” said DoR officials.

Sitaula said the government would invest in Rani-Itahari and Butwal-Bhairahawa development. “We are negotiating with the World Bank to assist in Birgunj-Pathlaiya section and seeking Japanese help for Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel road,” he said.
