FNCCI election: Clash of the titans
KATHMANDU, APR 05:
The countdown has begun. With only seven days remaining for the executive committee election of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), two candidates—Suraj Vaidhya and Ajad Shrestha—filed their nominations for the top FNCCI post on Monday.
From both panels, six persons registered their candidacies for vice president, 24 from the districts, 26 from associate bodies, 28 from the commodities associations and 26 from regional zones to represent their respective groups. The election committee has fixed April 11 at 1 pm as the date for withdrawal of nominations. FNCCI will elect its new leadership in its 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM) slated for April 11-12.
Unlike in past elections, this election may witness a close contest between the two panels. In Vaidhya\\\'s panel, Bhaskar Raj Karnikar is vying for senior vice president, while Bhawani Rana, Kiran Sakha and Pashupati Murarka are fighting for vice presidents\\\' posts from district chambers, commodities groups and associates, respectively. Shrestha\\\'s panel has presented Krishna Prasad Tamrakar as candidate for senior vice-president, while Nirak KC, Pradip Jung Pandey and Pradeep Man Vaidhya are vying for vice-president seats from the district chambers, commodities group and associates, respectively. All of them filed their nominations on Monday.
Held every three years, the FNCCI elections have always been high stake. Efforts to forge consensus for unanimous election of the president still not yielding positive results, this election is likely to be the toughest since the Binod Chaudhary-Padma Jyoti contest in the mid-90s. Past presidents of FNCCI, who have always been kingmakers in past elections, are busy meeting the two candidates—Vaidhya and Shrestha—to prod them iron out their differences. They also issued a joint press statement stressing for a unanimous candidate for the sake of unity in the private sector. Major business houses, business associations and past presidents are divided between the two panels. Former president Chandi Raj Dhakal is supporting Suraj Vaidhya, while FNCCI President Kush Kumar Joshi and former president Ananda Raj Mulmi are backing Ajad Shrestha.
With the election date nearing, voters from the district and zonal chambers have started pour into Kathmandu. The 46-year-old FNCCI has a network of 92 district and municipal chambers, 76 commodities groups and 439 associate members. As district and zonal chambers are considered vote banks, Vaidhya and Shrestha have travelled extensively across the country to garner support.
As per the FNCCI constitution, associates have a 30 percent weightage in their votes, commodities associations have 20 percent and district chambers have 50 percent.
The two panels have accused each other of manipulating provisions in the FNCCI statute. How the balance of power unfolds this week will determine the who will be the next president of the apex private sector body. So far, Keshav Pandey from Mechi, Hom Narayan Shrestha from Dhaulagiri, Madan Joshi from Narayani, Chop Narayan Shrestha from Gandaki, Bhaskar Raj Rajkarnikar from Mahakali and Bhusan Raj Lawat from Lumbini have been elected unopposed. The FNCCI executive committee will have 14 members representing 14 zones.
According to the FNCCI statute, the FNCCI central committee will have 16 representations from associate, 12 from commodities groups, 14 from districts and three vice-presidents and a chairman.
