KATHMANDU, June 21:
Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) showed grave concern on labour dispute in Biratnagar-based Surya Nepal — garment division. The umbrella organisation of private sector condemned irresponsible behaviour of a segment of workers in the one of the largest garment industry of the country.

Surya Nepal is closed from June 16, after police intervened on worker’s agitation. The workers protested against ‘No Work No Pay’ making hostage to 42 employees of the garment for 30 hours.

Workers threatening, mishandling and padlocking the company is intolerable, it said. FNCCI also added that workers will not get remunerations for the period of strike. We have agreed in principal with trade unions on No Work No Pay, it said.

It has also urged the workers to solve the problem through talks rather than closing the industry. “We urge concern parties to solve the problem on table and open the industry,” the FNCCI said.

The agreement between the employers and employees including the three major trade unions — affiliated to Nepal Congress, CPN-UML, and UCPN-Maoists — has incorporated the social security plan and ‘No Work No Pay’.

However, the UCPN-Maoists splinter trade unions and some Madhesh-based parties affiliated trade unions have challenged the agreement. Due to labour troubles Nepali industries are fast loosing their competitiveness.
