Flash Flood Risk Persists in Bhotekoshi and Trishuli River Systems

The risk of flash floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems remains high today, with water levels expected to rise amid ongoing rainfall and the possibility of further precipitation in the upstream areas of the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa.

Saraswati Bista, a flood expert at the Flood Forecasting Division under the Centre of Hydrology and Water Resources Research, said water levels in the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and surrounding rivers are likely to increase today.

The Division has urged residents living along riverbanks in Rasuwa and Nuwakot to remain highly alert due to the possibility of flash floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.

According to Bista, rising water levels could trigger moderate flash floods in rivers and streams across several districts. These include Taplejung, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Udayapur, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchok, Kavrepalanchok, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, Dhading, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahu, Lamjung, Manang, Mustang, Myagdi, Kaski, Syangja, Parbat and Dolpa, along with nearby areas.

The Division has also warned that water levels in smaller rivers and streams could rise significantly in Rukum East, Rukum West, Salyan, Jajarkot, Surkhet, Dailekh, Kalikot, Mugu, Humla, Jumla, Achham, Bajhang, Bajura, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Darchula and Kanchanpur. A moderate risk of sudden flooding has been forecast in these areas.

The Division has advised people living near riverbanks and those travelling along rivers and streams to remain cautious and closely monitor weather and flood updates, as sudden rises in water levels and flash floods are possible in small rivers and streams.
