The earlier decision of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) making it mandatory for trekkers to be accompanied by licensed trekking guides has come into effect since May 31,2023.

Earlier on March 09, 2023, NTB has issued a press release notifying the same decision to come into effect since the said date.

As per the decision under implementation now, all trekkers mandatorily require to obtain a Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) card. In the same manner, the trekkers have to be accompanied by licensed trekking guides through authorized trekking agencies under the Govt of Nepal.

As per the press release, the decision has been taken to check adverse incidents like getting lost en-route, health issues and potential natural disasters along the way.

NTB believes that the decision will ensure the safety of the trekkers. It states, "With this implementation trekkers will have immediate access to professional support system and will help in addressing the challenges of rescue operation in case of any unwarranted situation.

NTB also informed that TIMS card has been priced for Rs. 1000 for SAARC nationals and Rs. 2000 for other foreign nationals.
