Customs clearance activities at the Birgunj Customs Office have come to a standstill.

Importers and domestic producers stopped the clearance process from today following efforts to enforce a mandatory Maximum Retail Price (MRP) system on imported goods.

Through a notice issued on April 8, the federal government had decided to make it compulsory for all goods entering through customs points to carry an MRP label.

According to Uday Singh Bista, Information Officer at the Birgunj Customs Office, clearance operations were partially disrupted as traders and entrepreneurs failed to submit the required MRP details.

“We initiated the implementation of the MRP rule from today in line with the government’s directive, but the process was affected when traders attempted to clear goods without fixing the MRP,” he said.

On average, the Birgunj Customs Office collects between Rs 500 million and Rs 600 million in revenue each day.
