KATHMANDU, Sept 8:
Amid increasing cases of misappropriation of Indian Currency by producing fake customs documents, Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun on Wednesday directed customs officials to take immediate measures to bring and end to such anomalies.

During his visit to the Department of Customs (DoC) on the day, Pun issued 14-point instructions putting emphasis on making customs administration well-equipped and disciplined to check rising cases of cross border smuggling of goods and to increase customs revenue.

“We have reports of individuals and firms producing customs declaration forms for fictitious imports. Such wrongdoers must be brought to book. We have to make sure that such incidents do not repeat in the future,” the new finance minister said, adding, “Maintaining a proper valuation of goods at customs points is a challenging task. Customs officials have to take initiative to end the growing trend of undervaluation of imports.”

Pun underscored the need to forge proper coordination among DoC, Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) and security agencies to control smuggling of goods. He also instructed DoC to give continuity to ongoing programs aimed at trade facilitation and reforms and modernization of customs points.

The minister also instructed DoC officials to keep record of customs offices that fail to meet revenue target, check revenue leakage and ignoring economic discipline.

Briefing the minister, Tanka Mani Sharma, director general of DoC, said the department mobilized Rs 5.03 million over the first 20 days of the second month (mid-August to mid-September) of the current fiscal year. This is about 62 percent of Rs 8.04 billion that the department has targeted to collect during the month.
