Cardamom Exports Surge from Mechi Customs Office in First Half of FY 2082/83
The Mechi Customs Office has recorded a significant rise in cardamom exports during the first six months of the current fiscal year 2082/83 BS, reflecting strong performance in agricultural trade.
According to the Office, a total of 3.46 million kilograms of cardamom worth Rs 7.2 billion were exported during the review period. This marks a substantial increase compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Ishwar Kumar Humagain, Information Officer of the Mechi Customs Office, stated that cardamom exports increased by 58 percent in the first half of the current fiscal year. In contrast, exports during the corresponding period of the last fiscal year were valued at Rs 4.55 billion.
In addition to cardamom, exports of several other commodities also witnessed notable growth. Humagain shared that exports of chhurpi, veneer sheets, and lentils increased significantly during the review period. Among these, lentil exports recorded a remarkable 481 percent growth, while veneer sheet exports rose by 109 percent compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.
However, not all export items showed positive growth. The Mechi Customs Office reported a decline in the export of tea and plywood during the same period, indicating mixed performance across different commodities.
Officials attribute the overall rise in exports to increased demand in international markets and improved trade facilitation at the border points under the Mechi Customs Office. The Office expects export activities to remain strong in the remaining months of the fiscal year, contributing positively to the country’s trade balance.
The Mechi Customs Office plays a key role in Nepal’s export trade, particularly for agricultural and forest-based products, and the recent growth highlights the region’s importance in boosting national exports.
