Cabinet Appoints Dr Diwakar Bhatta as Chairperson of Consumer Court
The Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday has appointed Dr. Diwakar Bhatta as the Chairperson of the Consumer Court, strengthening the country’s judicial mechanism for consumer rights protection.
The appointment was made on the recommendation of the Judicial Council, in line with constitutional provisions governing judicial nominations. Government Spokesperson and Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal confirmed that Dr. Bhatta was serving as a judge at the Kathmandu District Court before his new assignment.
Dr Bhatta brings more than two decades of experience in the field of law and justice. Academically, he earned a Master of Laws (LLM) from Tribhuvan University, graduating first in the first division from Nepal’s first LLM programme. He later obtained another LLM in International Law and Human Rights from the University of Hong Kong, also securing a first-division distinction. He additionally holds a PhD in law, further strengthening his academic credentials.
Known for his contribution to legal scholarship, Dr Bhatta has authored dozens of research articles focusing on law, justice, and judicial practice. He is widely recognized for his expertise in legal writing, research, and professional training, and has conducted numerous research and capacity-building programmes at both national and international institutions.
Officials believe his blend of academic excellence, judicial experience, and research background will contribute significantly to strengthening consumer justice and ensuring more effective adjudication of consumer-related disputes in Nepal.
