Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has approved and unveiled a Directory for the use of its real-time and historical data.

Now, financial institutions, research firms, news portals, analysts, students, and investors can ethically use market data after paying a certain fee. According to the new directory, NEPSE will provide an API for users.

As of now, many data providers had been scraping the data from NEPSE's website. Apart from slowing down NEPSE's website due to artificial traffic buildup, the scraping process also carried the risk of data misrepresentation. Now, NEPSE will provide an API for those who ask for the data. API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface, which is a software intermediary that allows communication between NEPSE's storage of data and the entity that wants the data.

According to the directory, investment companies, financial analysts, data providers, news portals, non-commercial educational institutions, and foreign companies/individuals (for research) can all ask for the API. Those applying for the API should disclose the purpose of data collection and also mention the IP address, VPN parameters, etc.

If the data provided is used for unauthorized purposes, NEPSE has the right to discontinue the service and even impose a fine as a penalty. NEPSE also carried the right to inspect the service user to ensure that the data is used ethically.

The API fee varies for individuals, educational institutions, research firms, and so on. It seems that the fee is highest for institutions who claim they will redistribute the data in some way.
