Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared that she will return to Bangladesh “this year,” despite facing a death sentence handed down in absentia months after her government was overthrown following a mass student-led uprising.
Hasina, 78, fled to neighboring India in August 2024 after widespread protests brought an end to her 15-year rule in Bangladesh. Since leaving office, she has largely remained out of the public eye, appearing only through a rare speech broadcast at a packed press event in New Delhi in January this year.
In a recent interview with NDTV, Hasina dismissed the court verdict against her, calling it “illegal, unconstitutional and politically motivated.” She said she was unafraid of the death sentence and accused political opponents of repeatedly conspiring against her.
Reflecting on her political career, Hasina stated that despite numerous attempts to undermine her leadership, she had been elected Prime Minister five times by the people’s vote and had worked toward what she described as unprecedented national development during her tenure.
She firmly stated that she would overcome all political obstacles and conspiracies before returning to Bangladesh later this year.
In November last year, a court in Dhaka found Hasina guilty on charges including incitement, ordering killings, and failing to prevent atrocities during political unrest, sentencing her to death by hanging. Dhaka
Following the verdict, activities of her former ruling party, the Awami League, once one of Bangladesh’s most influential political organizations, were officially banned by authorities.
Political relations between Bangladesh and India have shown signs of improvement after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman secured a landslide election victory in February, forming a new government in the South Asian nation of nearly 170 million people.
However, tensions continue to linger as Bangladesh has repeatedly demanded Hasina’s extradition from India, creating diplomatic friction between the two neighboring countries.
Hasina’s latest statement signals that Bangladesh’s political crisis may continue to intensify in the coming months as uncertainty surrounds her possible return and the legal consequences awaiting her.
