New Forensic Labs Planned in Bardibas, Dhangadhi, Butwal and Birendranagar
Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun has said that the government has given priority to strengthening the National Forensic Science Laboratory.
Speaking at a meeting of the Education, Health and Information Technology Committee under the House of Representatives, during discussion on the “National Forensic Science Laboratory (Establishment and Operation) Bill, 2081,” he informed that new physical structures of forensic laboratories will be built in Bardibas, Dhangadhi, Butwal, and Birendranagar.
Committee chair Dr Ojaswi Sherchan said that it is necessary to further improve the capacity of the laboratory. During the discussion, experts Om Prakash Sharma and Gopal Chaudhary highlighted the importance of DNA testing and the establishment of a DNA bank for identifying people in criminal cases.
Another expert, Nirajan Thapa, pointed out a shortage of trained staff in the laboratory and suggested that the bill should include clear provisions for training and skill development.
Lawmakers including Dr Chandra Mohan Yadav and Dr Lekhjung Thapa stressed the need for a DNA database and also suggested ensuring DNA security through proper auditing. Similarly, MP Pukar Bam said the laboratory should be expanded to operate effectively across the country, while MP Guru Prasad Baral raised concern about preventing the brain drain of skilled scientists. MPs Chandan Kumar Singh and Ganesh Paudel also emphasized the need for sufficient budget and resources to strengthen the laboratory system.
