Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was killed on Wednesday when his charter aircraft crashed and caught fire, authorities confirmed. Four other people on board the aircraft, including two staff members and two crew, also lost their lives.

Pawar, a prominent leader from one of India’s top political families, was reportedly traveling to his home region to campaign for local body elections at the time of the crash.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed the incident and said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

The sudden demise of Ajit Pawar marks a significant loss for Maharashtra politics, given his long-standing influence in the state and his role in regional governance.
