KMC streets to be illuminated by solar lamps

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Office has planned to install 6,000 solar lamps in the city streets. The installation of solar lamps taking place on a community-based approach is estimated to cost Rs 800 million.
Accordingly, locals will have to bear 15 per cent of the total cost while the KMC Office will invest 25 per cent and remaining 60 per cent will be borne by the government, KMC, Physical Infrastructure and Construction Department Chief Dr Uttar Kumar Regmi said.
Besides, the KMC Office hopes that the installation of solar lamps would help ease nighttime human and vehicular movement and reduce road accidents and criminal activities.
Schools, hospitals, public organisation and service-oriented organisations will have to bear 30 percent of the cost if they want to be equipped with solar lamps.
During the 18th SAARC Summit that was held in the country, Narayangopal Chowk, Baneshwor, Koteshwor, Singha Durbar, Maitighar, Thapathali and Old Buspark areas witnessed the installation of 150 street solar lamps. RSS
