FNCCI to appoint new president
KATHMANDU:
The past presidents of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) have started the homework to unanimously appoint a new president for the remaining tenure of the existing executive committee, which expires in April 2017.
After its president, Pradeep Jung Pandey was arrested two week ago on a three-decade-old corruption charge, FNCCI needs to elect a new president within six months, according to its statute.
“Though there is an option to go for election, we want to disseminate the message of private sector being united,” said Ravi Bhakta Shrestha, former president as well as the disciplinary committee chair of the FNCCI, explaining the motive behind the move.
FNCCI is widely criticised of over politicisation, as some office bearers refused to attend the first few executive meetings after Pandey took the helm of FNCCI.
The past presidents, who were divided during the election period last year, seem to be burying their hatchets to select the president unanimously as they attempt to salvage the image of the largest private sector umbrella body.“We will try hard to elect a president through consensus,” said Suraj Vaidya, immediate past president of the FNCCI.
The meeting of the representatives of district and municipal chambers and commodity/sectoral association is going to be held tomorrow in FNCCI. During the meet, the idea of appointing a new president will also be floated, a source with the direct knowledge of the matter said on the condition of anonymity. The meeting of office bearers of FNCCI is scheduled for April 10, a day before its annual general meeting (AGM). The meeting will formally remove Pandey from the post of FNCCI president.
Then, after the AGM, the meeting of standing committee, which includes the chairs of respective sectoral committees, will decide the date for special AGM for selection of its president, the source added
